What exists
The data broker industry is worth about $434 billion in 2025. Most of it runs without the consent of the people whose data it sells.
Thirty-three brokers reported selling or sharing US residents' data with actors in North Korea, China, Russia, or Iran in 2025. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau called the industry one that "profits by enabling scamming, stalking, and spying." Forty-three percent of registered California data brokers didn't respond to consumer data requests.
