In March 2025, drivers in three California cities rallied in an ongoing wage-theft lawsuit against Uber and Lyft that could total billions. Uber settled a separate New York case for $290 million. The question running through every case is the same: do the workers who built the value have any claim on it?

What is possible
WinCo Foods employees have averaged 18% annual returns on their stock since 1985. Floor staff retire with seven-figure stakes.
WinCo contributes 20% of an eligible employee's annual pay as stock. Publix Super Markets is the largest employee-owned company in the US at 260,000+ employees. Mondragon, the worker-cooperative federation founded in Spain in 1956, employed 70,000 people in 2024 on €11.2 billion in revenue. Ownership wasn't a benefit. It was the structure.
